A rich heritage, advanced technology, quality craftsmanship, and premium design have all been brought together seamlessly to create the new Jeep® Cherokee – the evolution of the most capable mid-size SUV that’s just as comfortable with the demands of modern city living as it is with adventures off the beaten track.
The exterior of the new Jeep Cherokee has been refreshed to deliver a new, modern appearance and distinguished look that remains true to Jeep’s iconic style while projecting the model’s premium personality. The new exterior design features a new fascia, standard full LED headlamps, daylight running lamps (DRL) and fog lamps surrounded by bright trim details. The signature ‘waterfall’ bonnet has a new lightweight aluminum structure and is separate from the front wings, further contributing to the Cherokee’s distinctive look.
At its heart, the 2.2-litre MultiJet II turbo diesel featuring Stop/Start (ESS) technology offers incredible flexibility and all-around performance. When paired with the nine-speed automatic transmission it produces 195 hp, 450 Nm of torque and is available in the 4×4 configuration (with 4WD LOW two-speed PTU available as an option) and – for the first time on Cherokee – also in the 4×2 configuration.
The architecture of the 2.2-litre MultiJet II four-cylinder engine includes a specific 16 valve twin camshaft aluminum head designed to withstand the increased working pressure of the common rail with Injection Rate Shaping, which operates at 2000 bar. The design of the pistons, connecting rods and crankshaft, is optimized to reduce weight.
Front independent suspension with McPherson struts and a rear independent multi-link suspension absorb on-road and off-road obstacles while providing superb comfort for vehicle occupants. The front suspension provides 17 cm (6.7 inches) of travel, while the rear suspension has 19 cm (7.8 inches) of travel for better articulation. Isolated rear cradle, high-strength, low-alloy front cross members and superior torsional rigidity all contribute to a smoother and quieter ride and to the superior handling of the new Cherokee.
Unmatched Jeep 4×4 capability
Available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, the new Cherokee offers a choice of three innovative 4×4 systems which have been enhanced for unmatched 4×4 capability in all weather conditions.
Jeep Active Drive I: This system has been entirely redesigned. Jeep engineers set out to reduce weight and enhance the efficiency of the next-generation Rear Drive Module (RDM), which is fully automatic and delivers seamless operation in and out of four-wheel drive at any speed. This results in a reduced weight of about 8 kilograms and a reduction of low-speed system drag torque by half for fuel savings. Jeep Active Drive I, which does not require any driver intervention or feedback, delivers a correction to ensure vehicle stability and improves response during both understeer and oversteer conditions.
Active Drive I is a full-time four-wheel drive system that does not require any driver input. Under normal conditions, it sends all available torque to the front wheels while monitoring the speed of the front and rear axles. If the system detects that the front axle is moving faster than the rear axle it will send power through the power transfer unit to the rear axle until speeds are equally distributed, delivering an easy-to-use all-weather boost in capability.
Jeep Active Drive II: Active Drive II includes all of the features of Active Drive I but adds, thanks to a two-speed PTU, a selectable 4WD low gear range mode with 2.91:1 gear reduction that allows for enhanced climbing ability, as well as outstanding crawl ratios in severe off-road conditions.
This system also includes Hill-descent Control, which allows the Cherokee to provide controlled hill descent in rough terrain without the driver needing to touch the brake pedal.
Selec-Terrain: All Cherokee 4×4 systems feature the renowned Jeep Selec-Terrain traction control system, with four modes (Auto, Snow, Sport, and Sand/Mud).
Rear axle disconnect: equipped on all 4×4 systems, this device results in reduced energy loss when 4×4 capability is not needed to the benefit of fuel efficiency. The rear-axle disconnect seamlessly switches between two and four-wheel drive for full-time torque management and does not require input from the driver.
The Fourth-generation UconnectTM Systems
The new Jeep Cherokee also receives the latest UconnectTM systems, delivering communication, entertainment and navigation features and other innovations designed to enhance both the driving experience and onboard comfort.
In the UK, Jeep Cherokee is equipped with the UconnectTM 8.4-inch system, which includes enhanced processing power, faster start-up times and touchscreens that display high-resolution graphics. The system allows the driver to control many onboard features, including climate and audio, directly through the UconnectTM display. Jeep Cherokee models equipped with the UconnectTM 8.4 system features high-definition, full-color capacitive touchscreens and includes Apple CarPlay and Android AutoTM functionalities.
Functions of the new UconnectTM system also include hands-free calling, navigation and text-to-talk features for a safe, comfortable and connected everyday driving experience. Built-in radio options are also available to allow drivers and passengers to stream Internet radio through Bluetooth or plug-in compatible personal devices into USB or AUX ports.
The new Jeep Cherokee will be offered in the UK in Limited and Overland trim levels and with the 2.2-litre MultiJet 195 hp engine with automatic transmission. Prices will be announced closer to the car’s introduction.
