In Auto Expo 2018, Tata Racemo awwed everyone when the covers came off it as it did in 2017 Geneva motor show. Auto Expo 2018 displays Racemo the very first time in India, and the cherry of the topping is the unveiling of an electric version of the car, in addition to the original turbo boosted-petrol concept.
The EV version of the Racemo has been christened ‘Racemo +-‘ comes with a 150kW electric motor that charges from a lithium-ion battery pack. A full charge gives the Racemo +- an overall range of 350km. Also, there is an option of fast charging for the battery pack, but it can be classified as a rumour.
Regular Racemo has mid-mounted powertrain with a 190hp, twin-turbo version of Tata’s three-cylinder, 1.2-litre petrol engine. Power is then sent to the rear wheels via six-speed AMT gearbox that can be operated via paddles at the steering wheel.

The futuristic Racemo is built on a patented multi-material sandwich structure called MOFlex. Tata’s MOFlex sandwich structure consists a foam filling which has been injected in between the composite skins to form an incredibly stiff and light panel. This gives a greater degree freedom in design. Racemo’s design is a work of multiple surfaces and extreme shapes aimed at making the people admire the work; something it does with ease. The wide front grille has a hint of the now signature Tata family look, while the complex-looking rear seems to have drawn inspiration from the BMW i8. The Racemo’s has butterfly doors which increases the oomph factor.
How Tata will take the Racemo story forward is now everyone is leaned to watch upon. The sportscar model started life as a dummy model for digital racing platforms. But then top management was very much impressed by the concept that they green-lighted a project for low-volume production under a newly christened ‘Tamo’ sub-brand. Since then, Tata Motors undertook a major cost-cutting drive and had put plans for Tamo and the Racemo on hold.
