Maruti Suzuki India kicked off 2018 Auto Expo in fine style with the global unveiling of the Suzuki Future S concept. The first of over 100 unveils at India’s biennial auto show in Greater Noida, the Future S symbolizes the design shift for India’s largest automaker and a hint at what future Maruti cars will look like.
The body and boxy Stance of the Future S is unmistakably an SUV, apparent from high bonnet line and wide haunches. It also defines clear intention of Maruti Suzuki to train its sights on the SUV segment. The growing preference for SUVs as a body style across Small car segment of the market is driving towards new design direction. Currently, the only Sub-SUV Maruti has in the market is the Vitara Brezza, which sells on average of over 13,000 units a month.
With the overall length and wheelbase similar to the Maruti Suzuki Ignis, the Future S is clearly an ultra-compact SUV and, like the Brezza is intended to take advantage of the tax benefits offered to sub-four meters cars in length. Future S has tactically aimed at a segment below it, where it will go up against the ever popular Renault Kwid and likes of Datsun Redi-Go and other small cars.
Styling cues of the Future S also suggest that Maruti Suzuki is intending more on a traditional SUV design like that of the hugely successful Brezza. Maruti-Suzuki wants to replicate that success in other SUV segments where it is yet not present to establish itself. The dwindled response to the S-cross and less than subdued sales of the Ignis are proof enough that crossovers don’t command the same appeal as a conventional SUV.
No word on when the production version of the Future S will go on sale but it could be as early as the end of this year.
Built on Suzuki’s lightweight Heartect platform and to come with only a petrol engine at launch, followed by Maruti Suzuki’s first in-house-developed 1.5-litre, four-cylinder diesel. The Future S is believed to be turned into EV also.
The Future S-derived family of cars is unlikely to completely rehaul Maruti’s existing line-up and will co-exist alongside its basic models like the Celerio, Wagon R and Swift.
